How to Use Shaving Foam to Clean Upholstery, Remove Carpet Stains and More

Pale fabric sofas look great when first purchased, but over the years they become dulled by stains, dye transfer from clothing, and spills. One hack that has been getting a lot of attention in recent weeks in Facebook cleaning groups involves shaving foam. Users have shared before and after photos of sofas that have been brought back from the brink by a simple trick.

Cover the fabric you want to clean with a layer of shaving foam – any brand will do as long as it’s white. Let it sit on the couch for at least 20 minutes or up to an hour for more stubborn marks. Use a damp cloth to wipe away the suds, rubbing in stubborn stains as you go. Once the foam is completely removed, let it dry overnight.

The results are remarkable and it can be used to treat areas rather than treating an entire piece of furniture if you prefer – ideal for high traffic areas like armrests which can become dirty over time. This technique can also be used on dirty car seats by following the same steps: perfect for removing mud marks and general stains that can build up over time.

Clean your carpet

Just like our sofas, pale rugs show signs of wear fairly quickly and can look dirty if people have brought mud and mud into the house. To save yourself the expense of a professional deep clean, use the shaving foam first. Similar to the couch trick, cover the area you want to cleanse with shaving foam, massage it in, and leave it on for up to an hour. Wipe it off with a damp cloth or use a toothbrush to scrub off more stubborn marks. Repeat if necessary and let air dry. It’s also great for spills and stains.

Keep mirrors fog free

This is probably one of the most well-known uses for shaving foam – other than for the actual shave, of course. You can clean bathroom mirrors with shaving foam to get a shiny finish that also prevents the mirror from fogging up after a hot shower. Lather the mousse and spread it on the mirror. Leave it on for a minute before removing it with a clean, dry towel. You can now immediately use a mirror, regardless of the amount of steam in the room.

Bathroom odors

While in the bathroom, you may notice an unpleasant odor. If you detect a hint of urine in the air, shaving foam can also remove it. Use it to clean the outside of the toilet, from the floor to the seat. It is particularly effective at cleaning grout, which can also contain unpleasant odors. Simply cover the floor around the toilet with shaving foam and scrub it down for a much nicer atmosphere.
